Details

Rich, warm, and beautifully unpredictable, these naturally coffee-dyed papers bring deeper vintage color and wonderfully distinctive patterning to journals, collage, mixed media, and paper crafts.

Each package contains 10 sheets of standard 8.5 × 11 inch copy paper, individually hand dyed using coffee.

Compared with the softer, lighter vintage coloring of my tea-dyed papers, the coffee-dyed papers develop a richer, deeper and bolder warmth. The natural dye settles differently across each sheet, creating variations in tone, mottling, markings, texture, and pattern that simply can't be duplicated by commercially printed paper.

Some sheets feature intentionally created stencil patterns, which can be particularly striking against the deeper coffee-dyed background. Others are left to display the patterns created naturally during the dyeing and drying process itself.

And sometimes the most interesting marks are the ones I never planned at all.

A textured surface, a cloth beneath the paper, a paper towel used during drying, or natural material from the dye bath can leave behind its own unexpected impression.

There is no standard assortment of these papers.

Every package is its own little collection of what happened when paper, coffee, water, pattern, and time met one another.

What You'll Receive

Each package contains:

  • 10 sheets of naturally hand-dyed paper
  • 8.5 × 11 inch standard letter-size sheets
  • Standard copy paper
  • Individually hand dyed using coffee
  • Richer, deeper vintage tones than the tea-dyed variety
  • Naturally occurring variations in color, markings, mottling, and texture
  • Some sheets may include intentionally created stencil patterns
  • Some sheets may be predominantly plain, allowing the natural dye patterns and markings to remain the focus
  • An assortment individually selected from the hand-dyed batch

The exact 10 sheets shown in the photographs are not necessarily the 10 sheets you will receive.

Each package varies.

Wander Through the Paper Garden

Step into a garden where paper takes its color from the natural world.

Wander Through the Paper Garden is a collection of hand-dyed papers created with natural materials, where color, water, texture, and time are allowed to leave their own marks behind.

No two sheets grow quite the same.

Some emerge softly mottled and quiet. Others carry deeper pools of color, delicate speckles, unexpected impressions, or patterns left behind during the dyeing and drying process. Some are given an additional layer of pattern through stenciling, while others are left to show whatever nature decided to create.

These beautiful variations are part of the journey.

Made for junk journals, collage, altered books, mixed media, paper crafting, and wherever your own creativity happens to wander.

The Beauty of Natural Dye

No two batches—and no two sheets—of naturally dyed paper are exactly alike.

Coffee produces wonderfully varied results. One area of a sheet may be lighter while another develops a deeper concentration of color. You may find mottling, speckles, organic markings, irregular edges of color, impressions, or subtle shifts in tone across a single sheet.

The drying process can contribute its own patterns as well. Paper may pick up impressions from cloth, paper towels, textured surfaces, or other materials it encounters along the way.

Some sheets are also deliberately patterned using stencils, creating more defined designs among the naturally occurring markings.

These characteristics are not printing, distressing added afterward, or attempts to make new paper artificially appear old.

They are part of the natural dyeing process itself.

And because that process doesn't repeat itself exactly, there is no “standard” 10-sheet package.

A Very Important Note About Color

This is especially important for the coffee-dyed papers.

The photographs do not fully capture the richness of their color.

I experimented with different camera settings and photographed the papers as carefully as possible, but the coffee tones consistently appeared lighter and more washed out in photographs than they appear in person.

In person, these coffee-dyed papers have a richer, bolder and deeper vintage tone than my lighter tea-dyed papers.

Screens also reproduce color differently, so the appearance may vary between phones, tablets, monitors, and other devices.

In addition, natural dye itself varies from sheet to sheet and batch to batch.

For all of these reasons, the listing photographs should be viewed as representative examples of the character, patterning, and general color family of the papers rather than an exact color match or representation of the particular 10 sheets you will receive.

Made for Creative Possibilities

Coffee-dyed paper is wonderfully versatile for projects calling for warmth, age, depth, or an organic handmade quality.

Use these sheets for junk journals, altered books, handmade journals, collage, mixed media, scrapbook layouts, folios, pockets, tuck spots, tags, card making, paper ephemera, backgrounds, correspondence, bookmaking, paper crafting, vintage-inspired projects, and more.

Stencil-patterned sheets can become beautiful focal pages or large collage elements, while quieter sheets make lovely backgrounds, writing pages, pockets, tags, and layering papers.

And don't overlook the scraps.

A torn corner containing an unexpected pool of coffee color or fragment of stencil pattern can sometimes become the best part of a collage.

Please Note

These papers are hand dyed rather than commercially printed or mechanically color-matched.

Natural variation is expected and may include differences in:

  • Color and depth of tone
  • Saturation
  • Mottling and speckling
  • Organic markings
  • Surface texture
  • Stencil design and placement
  • Impressions created during drying
  • Small natural traces or inclusions associated with the dyeing process
  • Slight waviness, wrinkles, softened edges, or other changes caused by exposure to liquid

Stencil designs, when present, may vary in pattern, position, clarity, and intensity.

These characteristics are part of the handmade nature of the paper and will differ from package to package.

You will receive 10 sheets. You will not necessarily receive the exact sheets pictured.

Care & Storage

Because these papers receive their color from natural materials rather than commercially manufactured colorfast dyes, some change in color may occur over time.

For best preservation, store unused paper in a cool, dry location away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and humidity.

Natural dyes can react differently with adhesives, sealants, sprays, inks, wet media, and other art materials. When the final appearance is important, testing your chosen product on a scrap or inconspicuous area first is recommended.

These papers are intended for decorative paper crafting and creative use.

They are not represented as archival, acid-free, food-safe, or colorfast unless specifically stated otherwise.
