Onion skins leave naturally formed autumn markings of their own. Deep cranberry and dark green hand-dyed papers bring the richer colors of the season into the book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLeaves appear everywhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome are hand cut from standard paper, others from watercolor paper, and many have been individually painted with watercolor to create the changing colors of autumn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd tucked among all of it is original artwork created especially for this journal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis isn't a reproduction or a made-to-order journal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThere is only one Autumn Remembered.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe journal shown in the photographs and video is the journal you will receive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eAn Old Book Begins Again\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the original book to remain part of the story rather than simply becoming a shell around something new.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe journal was constructed using an \u003cstrong\u003eold vintage book cover\u003c\/strong\u003e, and I retained the \u003cstrong\u003efirst two and final two pages of the original book\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose surviving pages provide a small connection to the book's earlier life before the new journal begins to unfold between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe new pages are held within a \u003cstrong\u003ewrapped binding\u003c\/strong\u003e, creating the wonderfully full, substantial spine and handmade character visible in the photographs and video.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause a genuine older book has been repurposed, signs of its previous life and age should be expected.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI consider those marks part of the journal rather than imperfections to be erased.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e90 Pages to Wander Through\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAutumn Remembered contains 90 pages\u003c\/strong\u003e, with an intentionally varied rhythm from beginning to end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome pages are richly embellished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome hold artwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome contain pockets, tuck spots or removable pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome incorporate printed digital designs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd others are deliberately quieter, giving the new owner room to make this journal their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is space for writing, photographs, collected ephemera, recipes, memories, sketches, additional collage, keepsakes—or whatever else you decide belongs between its covers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is already an artwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut it isn't finished telling its story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat part belongs to you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eSix Signed Original Watercolor Paintings\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmong the pages are \u003cstrong\u003e6 original watercolor paintings\u003c\/strong\u003e created by hand for this journal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are not printed reproductions of paintings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are individual pieces of original artwork incorporated into the journal itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir autumn subjects and colors become part of the journey through the book, appearing among the dyed papers, botanical elements, pockets and embellishments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original artwork is one of the things that makes this journal particularly special to me. Colored by Autumn\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA large portion of this journal was created using papers that I \u003cstrong\u003ehand dyed and patterned browns and vintage staining.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTea\u003c\/strong\u003e — for softer, lighter vintage warmth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOnion skins\u003c\/strong\u003e — used during the hand-dyeing process so that the natural skins can leave their own organic shapes, mottling and autumn-colored markings upon the paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDark green Rit dye\u003c\/strong\u003e — bringing the deep greens of late-season foliage into the journal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDark cranberry Rit dye\u003c\/strong\u003e — adding rich wine, berry and autumn-red tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatural and hand-dyeing processes do not produce perfectly uniform paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStaining, mottling, pigment concentration, marks from natural materials, wrinkles, variations in color, irregular edges or impressions and other unpredictable effects are part of the process.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose differences are intentional parts of the journal's handmade character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeveral pages also incorporate \u003cstrong\u003eprinted digital artwork\/designs\u003c\/strong\u003e, which are combined with the hand-created papers and identical manufactured embellishments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany were \u003cstrong\u003eindividually hand Die-cut\u003c\/strong\u003e, using both standard paper and watercolor paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey were then painted with watercolor to build the oranges, yellows, reds, browns and changing shades associated with autumn foliage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause they were die-cut and painted individually, variations in shape, coloring and brushwork are expected.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust like leaves outside, they weren't meant to match.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eLittle Things Waiting to Be Found\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the pleasures of a junk journal is discovering what has been tucked into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThroughout Autumn Remembered you'll encounter \u003cstrong\u003ehandmade embellishments, pockets, tuck spots, tags, journal cards, layered decorative elements and removable pieces\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome things announce themselves immediately.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOthers wait until you turn another page or look inside a pocket.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe journal was designed to be explored rather than simply viewed from beginning to end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePieces can be removed for writing or closer examination and returned to their places, while the pockets and tuck spots can eventually hold the owner's own photographs, notes, receipts, tickets, pressed You may see wrinkles, waves, uneven coloration, staining, mottling, pigment variation, impressions left by natural materials, irregularities associated with wet media, hand-cut edges and other evidence of the processes used to create them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlease note that approximately three of the hand-dyed pages have more noticeable edge irregularities created during the dyeing process. Two have corners that are missing or noticeably rounded, and one has a more jagged edge. I chose to include these particular sheets because the results of the dyeing were simply too beautiful to leave out.
