The reverse sides feature a mixture of my naturally dyed papers and selected scrapbook papers, creating an ever-changing collection of color, texture and pattern as the journal is opened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe journal is housed inside an \u003cstrong\u003eupcycled Tiger Balm tin\u003c\/strong\u003e that I transformed by hand. I sanded and scratched the original surface before adding rust effects, layers of paint and an intentionally aged and weathered finish. The finished surface was sealed to help protect it while retaining all of the irregularities and character of an old, well-loved object.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lid became another little mixed-media artwork of its own. Resin roses, beads and a butterfly were attached with UV resin, then antiqued and selectively highlighted with touches of gold paint. I finished the piece with a small metal file plate holding a coffee-dyed paper label simply marked \u003cstrong\u003e“Journal.”\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eAn important part of its handmade character\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the original metal tin has been altered with multiple layers of paint and finishing materials, \u003cstrong\u003ethe lid fits snugly but does not sit perfectly even around the entire edge\u003c\/strong\u003e. This is visible in the photographs and is not damage or a manufacturing defect. I think the slight irregularity feels completely at home with the deliberately weathered, timeworn character of the piece, but I want the buyer to know exactly what to expect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach mark, uneven surface, bit of antiquing and variation is part of this object's handmade nature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOne of a kind. browns and vintage staining.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTea\u003c\/strong\u003e — for softer, lighter vintage warmth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOnion skins\u003c\/strong\u003e — used during the hand-dyeing process so that the natural skins can leave their own organic shapes, mottling and autumn-colored markings upon the paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDark green Rit dye\u003c\/strong\u003e — bringing the deep greens of late-season foliage into the journal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDark cranberry Rit dye\u003c\/strong\u003e — adding rich wine, berry and autumn-red tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatural and hand-dyeing processes do not produce perfectly uniform paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStaining, mottling, pigment concentration, marks from natural materials, wrinkles, variations in color, irregular edges or impressions and other unpredictable effects are part of the process.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose differences are intentional parts of the journal's handmade paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey were then painted with watercolor to build the oranges, yellows, reds, browns and changing shades associated with autumn foliage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause they were die-cut and painted individually, variations in shape, coloring and brushwork are expected.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust like leaves Age-related wear, discoloration, marks, softened corners, surface changes and other evidence of age may therefore be present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLikewise, hand-dyed and hand-painted papers naturally contain variation. You may see wrinkles, waves, uneven coloration, staining, mottling, pigment variation, impressions left by natural materials, irregularities associated with wet media, hand-cut edges and other evidence of the processes used to create them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlease note that approximately three of the hand-dyed pages have more noticeable edge irregularities created during the dyeing process. Two have corners that are missing or noticeably rounded, and one has a more jagged edge. I chose to include these particular sheets because the results of the dyeing were simply too beautiful to leave out. The flowers were placed against the paper and subjected to heat and pressure, allowing the plant material to leave soft, irregular botanical impressions. The resulting papers have beautiful gray and smoky neutral tones with ghostlike traces of the flowers that created them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOther pages were \u003cstrong\u003eblueberry dyed\u003c\/strong\u003e, introducing muted blue and blue-violet tones that complement the bird theme, while \u003cstrong\u003ecoffee-dyed papers\u003c\/strong\u003e bring warmth and an aged appearance to the book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou'll also discover several \u003cstrong\u003erust-printed papers\u003c\/strong\u003e. These were made by placing rusty objects against the paper and allowing them to leave their naturally irregular marks and impressions behind.
